Civil partnerships were devised because the principal enemy of gay rights, the religious lobby, wanted to avoid losing what they wrongly perceived to be their monopoly on the word "marriage". Wow that we have equal marriage people can make of marriage what they wish and it is a bit silly to say that a word which now encompasses gender neutral pairing in a secular setting is in some way patriarchal. Let's just convert them all to marriages, save public money and have done. We should never have had them at all if the Blair government had pushed through equal marriage in 2004 - as I think it could.
