US firms in the City of London took the top two slots

Only one lawyer from the elite band of “magic circle” law firms features in the individual rankings for dealmakers for the first half of this year, figures published yesterday showed.

Murray Cox, a mergers and acquisitions lawyer at Slaughter and May, who only joined the firm’s partnership last year, was propped up the list of 15 in 15th position having completed 4 deals with a total value of £662 million.

The league table was headed jointly by lawyers from two US firms in London. Ian Bagshaw, partner at the City office of White & Case, completed eight deals which had a total value of £5.68 billion. Also on eight deals was Anthony Riley, a partner at Orrick Herrington & Sutcliff, but the total value of his tally was a mere £21 million.

The figures, compiled by Mergermarket and published on the Legal Week website, showed that Travers Smith – the mid-tier City firm – had the most individual lawyers in the top 15: the partners Edmund Reed, Spencer Summerfield and Paul Dolman.

The list will do nothing to debunk the view that mergers and acquisition work remains the province of macho lawyers. Only one woman featured on the list: the White & Case partner Caroline Sherrell.
