Partners at King & Wood Mallesons had been asked to contribute £1,000 to £2,500 for those who lost their jobs when the firm’s European venture collapsed

About 20 former staff of the defunct London-based European branch of King & Wood Mallesons are to begin receiving payments from a hardship fund understood to be worth a total of £100,000.

It was reported that the fund was doubled by a £50,000 contribution from the global law firm’s headquarters in China and Australia. The Lawyer magazine reported that £50,000 had been raised by former partners from London and Europe after an appeal was issued when the City office collapsed earlier this year.

Yesterday the Legal Week website said that the original figure had been topped up by contributions from partners in China and Australia. It also reported that between 80 and 100 former London, European and Middle East partners had been asked to contribute between £1,000 and £2,500 to the fund.
